Sound Ideas: The Newsletter For Sound & Video Users From Sound Vision Inc.

When Del Webb Corporation began work on the recreation building for its retirement community in Huntley, Illinois, they hired Sound Vision to install an extensive audio and video system. They knew we could provide highly useable systems engineered to fit perfectly with the function and aesthetics of the building. We installed:

  • Three high quality sound systems in the ballroom: a 14-speaker surround system for video entertainment and presentations, a concert system for live music, and a voice system for meetings

  • A large-venue video and data projection system in the ballroom
  • A 14-zone distributed audio system throughout the inside and outside of the facility
  • A CATV/MATV distributed television system in the bars, restaurant, lobby, and fitness center
  • High power sound systems for aerobics and water aerobics class areas

There was a time when setting up a sound system was a black art. "You did less, and you expected less," says John Miles, president of Sound Vision. "But in the last ten years the digital signal processor has changed everything we do."

If you're in charge of audio or video presentation systems, it's vital that you understand what a DSP is and what it does. So this month we've asked the engineering team at Lectrosonics to explain the technology and how it can help you.

"It's always a question of cost versus requirements," says SVI president John Miles. "We're using DSP now for everything beyond the most simple, budget-priced AV system."

Miles says Lectrosonics is his preferred vendor when he needs at least 8 channels of audio and up to 24 outputs. "For example, if I'm doing a midlevel conf room, I might have two-channel stereo plus multiple mic inputs. With the DM Series, I can process each input and output separately if I need to and really get some outstanding results."

"The great thing," Miles says, "is that we don't have to spend a lot of extra time for all the processing power we have with these systems. Yes, more functions mean more programming, but it's still easier than setting up an analog system."

One of the things that sets Sound Vision apart from other AV integrators is our devotion to training.

That starts with John Carlson, our chief design engineer, who holds an acoustical engineering degree from Purdue. John and the rest of our technical staff regularly attend industry certification programs, and we are one of the top two systems integrators in Illinois in terms of Infocomm International certification.

All of this training is important because sound and video systems are complicated to design and complex to install. You want the best people working on your job, in order to avoid unforeseen but expensive problems.
