Sound Ideas: The Newsletter For Sound & Video Users From Sound Vision Inc.

If you've been following the AV or computer trade press on the "white space debate" this year, you know that there have been some disturbing questions about how wireless microphones will fit in when analog TV broadcasts are shut down February 18.

The reason is that most wireless mic systems transmit on frequencies in the UHF spectrum between existing TV channels. The FCC has been talking about reassigning those frequencies to new users and no one has been sure if they were going to leave room for wireless microphones to operate.

There's some good news at last.
  • The FCC will accommodate wireless mics in the future, and the new FCC regulations appear to be practical and well-considered.
  • At least half of existing wireless mic systems should be fine.
  • Although many mic systems will eventually need to shut down, it looks like it will be several months before most users see any operating problems.
If you own UHF wireless mic systems, you'll need to identify which mics may be affected and decide how to handle the coming transition.

Since the FCC decision affects so many Sound Vision clients, we want to make sure you understand it, what it will mean to you and how we can help with potential problems.
