How do you build an AV system that stands the test of time? What does it take for a "cutting edge" project to still be up to date five years after installation?

A case in point: the lecture hall AV system Sound Vision installed at Concordia University’s Christopher Center, which continues to be one of the most popular teaching and presentation rooms on campus. How did we do it?

  • Preliminary planning identified critical needs.
  • A custom-built podium and instructor stations have worked well with Concordia’s teaching style.
  • The projector and switchers have been able to handle updated computer and video sources.
  • The control system has proven well-suited to the needs of professors and of AV staff

If you had an application that would push your projection system to the limits of its endurance, which projector would you choose?

That problem was a crucial one recently for the Field Museum, which needed projectors that would be able to run constantly without damage from overheating when turned on their side—something well beyond the capability of most projectors on the market.

The solution: projectors from Projection Design and Sound Vision. "They were the only ones that we could find that could run 24/7 on the vertical," says Tony Stepovy, media services manager for the museum.

The AV industry has been through a lot of changes in the last four decades. Yet in many ways, it remains the same: we’ve always had to be able to deal with new technology, new ways of doing things and the pressure of making sure that new products work properly and reliably.

Don Walker was able to thrive in that kind of environment because he learned early to work fast yet aim for perfection.

Though he spent most of his career at another AV integrator, we were very happy when he decided to make one more change and come to work at Sound Vision.
